The company will use high-end chips-similar to those designed for Mac-for cloud computing servers that handle the most complex AI tasks on Apple devices, while simpler AI-related functions will be handled directly on iPhone, iPad and Mac, according to people familiar with the matter. People familiar with the matter spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan was still kept secret.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, has said its own chip will give it an advantage in artificial intelligence.

The move is part of Apple's much-anticipated foray into generative AI. Generative AI is the technology behind ChatGPT and other popular AI tools. Apple is catching up with its big competitors in the field, but is set to announce its ambitious AI strategy at the Global developers Conference on June 10th.

Apple's plans to use its own chips and handle artificial intelligence tasks in the cloud were in the pipeline about three years ago, but the artificial intelligence craze fuelled by OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini forced it to move faster, prompting the company to speed up its schedule.
